Local artist on display at SCPLS King Family Library

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Sevier County Public Library System (SCPLS) is excited to host the art of Samuel D. Bivens during July. Bivens is a 62 year old disabled veteran, who, until recently, lived in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota where temperatures this past winter reached 50 degrees below zero! City water pipes froze and burst below the streets causing water to rise up and freeze in five foot high water spouts! Originally from Sevierville, Bivens chose to leave these frigid winter climates and return to his country home where winters can be a bit more sedate.

Bivens enjoyed painting when young but left the hobby/craft until this past winter when he was housebound for extended periods of time due to the extreme temps. It had been thirty years since he had lifted an artist’s paintbrush but being housebound encouraged him to return to this beloved hobby and he has been creating art ever since. He is excited to be able to display and sell his artworks during July at the King Family Library.

While Bivens is happy to be back in his hometown in the beautiful Smoky Mountains, he will miss the return of the swans each December in Minnesota for mating season. Annually on Christmas Day, the swans return to Pelican Lake (directly behind Bivens’ former home) and he was able to enjoy this natural wonder. Hundreds of swans came each year in mating pairs and soon, there were newborn baby swans everywhere.

Bivens says, "It was a wonderful sight to behold. But, there are equally as beautiful sights to see here and I will not be forced to freeze to death to enjoy those. Thank God, I’m home and I look forward to a great showing at the King Family Library, where you can take a piece of my artwork home with you for a small fee. Please come and enjoy the show."

Please take the time to explore the art gallery in the Creative Space on the 3rd floor at the King Family Library at 408 High Street in Sevierville to support local art and artists in our communities.
