Children's Museum Offers Clay Camps throughout Summer

The Children's Museum of Oak Ridge is holding clay camps for youth ages 3-16 this summer. Imagination Station Clay Camps will teach children how to make coil pots, beads, sculptures, pendants, animals, boxes, bowls and more.

The museum's resident clay artist Sherrie Carris will lead the camps throughout the summer. Carris and her husband Tom have worked from their home studio, Carris Pottery, since coming to Oak Ridge in 1977. They started their pottery business in 1972 on an Iowa farm, shortly after Sherrie had completed her M.A. and M.F.A. in ceramics at the University of Iowa. Carris received her teaching certification from The University of Tennessee.

The week-long camps will be offered Monday through Friday each week beginning June 13 through July 24. Morning camps are from 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon camps are from 1-4 p.m. Preschool camps are mornings only. Favorite pieces will be glazed and fired for pick-up in 2 weeks after camp. No camps will be held during the July 4 holiday week.

Fees for a single camp are $115 for members and $125 for non-members. For combo camps, morning and afternoon, fees are $170 for members and $180 for non-members. Payment may be made online through PayPal, by phone with Visa, MasterCard or Discover, or by check.
