Goodwill Vintage Fashion Show features new design challenge

The 33rd Annual Goodwill Vintage Fashion Show and Sale will be a night full of big colors and bold looks. Taking place on Thursday, September 21 at the Holiday Inn at World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville, the event will feature hundreds of vintage and vintage-inspired modern outfits, all found in local Goodwill stores.

This year’s event theme is “In Living Color,” and the runway selection will feature vivid and bold looks from the last century.

Items featured on the runway will be available for sale in the Vintage Boutique immediately following the show in the Vintage Boutique, a curated popup shop. This sale will feature exclusive vintage merchandise including clothing, hats, shoes, coats, furs, formals and accessories, as well as many current top name brands. Shoppers may purchase a $5 ticket at the door for access to the Vintage Boutique Presale, which starts at 5pm.

Though the Goodwill Vintage Fashion Show is one of Knoxville’s longest running fashion events, this year’s show has some new additions, including the Goodwill Design Challenge.

In July, six designers were selected to participate in the inaugural Goodwill Design Challenge. They were given 20 minutes to shop after hours at the Bearden Goodwill, where they could grab anything they needed to create a new, original garment for the contest. Designers were encouraged to use unconventional materials and methods to create their looks.

The six designers range widely in backgrounds and experience, but all are enthusiastic about the opportunity to compete in this unique challenge.

The designers are experienced fashion designer Angel Blanco of Angel Blanco Artwork, fiber artist Bailey Earith of Bailey Fiber Art Studio, musical gift creator Becky Chaffee of Violettes by Becky, 9-year old Kalani Christian Wilson of KC Designs, student Kris Walker, and graphic designer Melanie Drouhard.

The designers were given just over a month to create their looks; final outfits will walk down the runway at the Goodwill Vintage Fashion Show, where the audience will be given a chance to vote for their favorite designer to select a winner.

Event tickets include dinner, access to the fashion show and design showcase, and entrance to the post-show Vintage Boutique. Individual tickets are $50 each, or call for a table for 10 for $450. Doors for the show open at 6pm. It is highly recommended to buy tickets in advance at www.goodwillknoxville.org/vintage or by calling the Goodwill Marketing Department at 865-588-8567.

Proceeds from this event directly support Goodwill Industries-Knoxville, Inc.’s mission to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for individuals with barriers to employment in East Tennessee.
