TVA releases draft of natural resource plan
April 5, 2011

KNOXVILLE -- The Tennessee Valley Authority has drafted a Natural Resource Plan to help prioritize its stewardship efforts in categories as diverse as recreation facilities, water quality protection, wildlife and plant management, and historical and cultural site preservation.

The draft Natural Resource Plan and an accompanying draft Environmental Impact Statement are available for public review and comment through May 16. The documents can be viewed online at www.tva.com/nrp.

The plan will help guide TVA management and public land use over the next 20 years of about 293,000 acres of federally owned lands and 11,000 miles of shoreline across 46 reservoirs in seven states within TVA's service territory.

TVA often must balance protection of such things as aquatic habit and archaeological sites with the management of its campgrounds, day-use areas and other recreational opportunities along the Tennessee River system. For example, in the Natural Resource Plan category of water resources management, TVA encourages and supports efforts to provide and protect water resources for human health, fishing, swimming, boating, drinking, agricultural use, aquatic habitat and economic development.

The Natural Resource Plan will help TVA set a course that best meets these objectives while responding to the needs of the region's communities and residents.

TVA will host three public meetings to receive comments on the plan beginning at 6 p.m. local time:

April 11 – Pellissippi State Community College, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville, TN
April 20 – Marshall County High School, 416 High School Road, Benton, Ky
April 25 – Muscle Shoals High School, 1900 Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals, Ala

Comments may be submitted through the TVA website, www.tva.com; by mail to Chuck Nicholson, 400 W. Summit Hill Drive, WT-11 D, Knoxville, Tenn., 37902, or by calling (865) 632-3582.

Comments will be considered in TVA's analysis to determine the final Natural Resource Plan and will become part of the public record, including the names and addresses of those who comment.
