KNOXVILLE -- William C. Gibson, MD, FACS, a surgeon with Premier Surgical Associates, is one of nearly 30 clinical and administrative leaders from the U.S. and abroad selected to participate in one of the nation's foremost leadership development programs in patient safety.

The AHA-NPSF Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship is an intensive, yearlong professional development program for senior practitioners sponsored by the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF).

Program participants gain skills, knowledge, and leadership capabilities to establish and implement long-term strategic plans for patient safety and quality improvement.

"Participating in this fellowship is a huge honor and an excellent opportunity," said Gibson. "I look forward to expanding my knowledge of the patient safety discipline and developing relationships with fellow practitioners from across the country."

In the program, fellows participate in a series of learning retreats and webinars and design and implement an Action Learning Project with the goal of improving processes and spreading evidence-based safety practices that lead to better outcomes and performance within their organizations.

Headquartered in Knoxville, Premier Surgical Associates has 28 surgeons who perform general, vascular, endovascular, vein, bariatric, breast and laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedures. Premier physicians perform surgeries at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Parkwest Medical Center, Parkwest Surgery Center, Mercy Medical Center St. Mary's, St. Mary's Ambulatory Center, Physicians Surgery Center, and Blount Memorial Hospital and Maryville Surgical Center in Maryville.
