Obama speaks to Egypt

Tension in Egypt is nothing new. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been labeled a controlling dictator for many years and his actions over the past week are proving the people of Egypt correct.

On Tuesday, Facebook and Twitter were blocked in Egypt. On Thursday Blackberry Internet was blacked out and just after 12:01 am on Friday morning all Internet service in Egypt was shut down.

The result has been massive, violent protests throughout the streets of Egypt with some people being killed.

US government concern grew steadily in the past few days, and today President Obama decided to address the situation.

"The people of Egypt have rights that are universal," Obama said. "That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech and the ability to determine their own destiny. These are human rights and the United States will stand up for them everywhere. I also call upon the Egyptian government to reverse the actions that they've taken to interfere with access to the Internet, with cellphone service and to social networks that do so much to connect people in the 21st century."
