NASHVILLE, TN – This morning in Nashville attorneys announced comprehensive civil action against White County, White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, and White County personnel. The suit claims they were involved in the resurgence of eugenics in our country, this time in sleepy White County TN. The lawsuit claims the Sheriff and county leaders conspired to violate the Constitutional rights of those they determined were "undesirable" by forcing inmates to receive birth control implants or vasectomies in order to be released early from jail. The lawsuit further claims that the county violated Plaintiff's Due Process and Equal Protection rights were negligent in the performance of their duties and conspired to sterilize as many individuals determined to be "undesirable" by them as possible.

While detained in White County TN, the named Plaintiff was forced to undergo a procedure that implanted a birth control device into her body in order to be released from jail with a 30-day sentence reduction. White County and the Sheriff of White County coerced the plaintiff into being sterilized. The Sheriff and his staff embarked on a campaign to convince the plaintiff and other similarly situated people to be sterilized, in a quest to prevent individuals the county determined were "undesirable" from their human right to procreate and build a family. In the case of this plaintiff, the Sheriff knew that the plaintiff would not even receive the 30-day credit and caused the procedure to be performed anyway, in what can only be described as an "ends justify the means" eugenics scheme that harkens back to the worst of American and world history.

The suit was filed by Nexus Caridades Attorneys Inc., one of the largest providers of pro bono legal services in the country. Nexus Caridades, Inc. is committed to standing up for victims of abuse by government agencies and officials. For more information on the firm, visit www.nexuscaridades.com.
