GATLINBURG, TN -- The ‘Airport Park’ display at McGhee Tyson Airport has been selected for several awards. The Knoxville American Advertising Federation selected the display for a Gold Addy, Best of Category award, and Best of Show award in the Out-of-Home and Ambient Media division. In honor of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial, the baggage claim area at the McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville was transformed into an immersive visit to nine National Park Service units. Parks featured are Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Obed Wild and Scenic River, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Stones River National Battlefield, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The award-winning display covers over 18,000 square feet of wall space wrapped with innovative, original artwork introducing visitors to these special places.

“We are so proud of the creative team that helped us bring the parks to the people in this unique setting,” said Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Cassius Cash. “We thank the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority for their support in sharing the experience with travelers to our region.”

The displays creatively reflect the beauty, history, and significance of the National Park Service sites within a few hours drive of the airport. Each display describes unique park features and provides simple information to inspire people to include a national park in their visit to the Knoxville area. See Why Consulting and Robin Easter Design staff completed the artwork design, fabrication, and installation. The team created a virtual park visit that flows throughout the baggage claim area by weaving the essence of each park unit into unique, hand-painted original designs.

Each of the nine National Park Service units provided funds to support the column displays highlighting individual parks. Great Smoky Mountains Association provided the majority of the funding for the project. The design team included: Robin Easter (Creative Direction); Chad Youngblood (Strategy, Content Development, Media Buying); Whitney Sanders (Art Direction, Design, Illustration), Maddie Lane (Illustration), Joyanna Hurst (Illustration), Tom McCarter (Copywriting, Print Edge); and John Foster (Production and Installation). The project will now compete at the American Advertising Award regional level for further recognition.
