Knox County Health Department, Coordinated School Health announce 2018/2019 Youth Health Board

KNOXVILLE – Thirty Knox County high school students have started their year of service on the Youth Health Board. A collaborative effort between the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) and Coordinated School Health, the Youth Health Board serves as a forum for youth to affect our community’s well-being through volunteer activities and service-learning projects.

“The Youth Health Board is an excellent opportunity for students to gain leadership skills and develop a unique perspective on local public health issues,” said KCHD Public Health Educator Kelley Wilds. “We’re excited to begin our work in the community with this exceptional group.”

The members are selected each year from an applicant pool of high school students who demonstrate leadership skills, a commitment to the community and an interest in health-related issues. Past activities include: working with KCHD to conduct retail tobacco compliance checks; volunteering with the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee and Mobile Meals to deliver meals to seniors; and writing letters to local legislators in support of tobacco cessation laws.
