OAK RIDGE, TN - Dr. Michael D. Kass, senior engineer in the Fuels and Engines Research Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was recently recognized as a recipient of the Forest R. McFarland Award. The award is presented by SAE International, a global association committed to advancing mobility knowledge and solutions.
Dr. Kass was honored with this award for his outstanding contributions to the SAE Engineering Meetings Board and the development and dissemination of information through technical meetings, conferences, and professional development programs, or for contributions in facilitating or enhancing the interchange of technical information.
Dr. Kass is a Knoxville resident. He has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of dynamometer-based engine testing, combustion/emissions research, and engine materials and alternative fuels. For the past 12 years, Dr. Kass has been leading efforts to improve the performance and efficiency of small UAV engines through the incorporation of thermal barrier materials. Dr. Kass has earned his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Nebraska; a Masters degree in Ceramic Engineering from Clemson University, and a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He has 3 patents, 2 book chapters and over 30 publications. He holds committee memberships with SAE International and CRC.
