In my opinion: "Fill 'er up, and check the oil"

By George T. Weir, Jacksboro, TX

How long has it been since you've been able to say "Fill 'er up, and check the oil"? Well, that's too long.

I know that I'm old-fashioned and that everyone says that I live in the past. That may be true, but I can remember the time when we had "filling stations." Yes, you heard  me right -- "Filling Stations."

A "Filling Station" was a place where one could pull up to the pumps, and a friendly attendant would meet you and ask, "Fill 'er up?" You would say yes, then he would ask "Do you need me to check the oil?"  While doing this he would wash your windshield at no extra cost.

At this same location, you could get you floor boards cleaned out, tires checked for air, grease job, oil change, and flats fixed. You could get a good wash job and about anything else you could think about. Now, folks, that was a "Service Station."

When you stop and think about it, many of the old fashioned ways weren't so bad, especially for the elderly and for those that may not be able to pump their own gas for some reason.

Yes, some of them old cars used a lot of gas, but didn't they ride good?  I suppose we will always have to pump our own gas and bounce all over the road in these small cars they build now, but I suppose that is progress -- or is it?
