Maryville Scots Lambert, Payne earn GSAC honor

DECATUR, Ga.- With only a few weeks left before the conference tournament, the Great South Athletic Conference announces this week's batch of men's and women's basketball player of the week honorees. Winning their first award of the season are the duo of Wes Lambert and Kiera Payne of Maryville for men's and women's basketball, respectively.

Proving influential in her team's success this week, Payne helped Maryville to a perfect 3-0 record this week with GSAC wins over Covenant, Huntingdon, and Spelman. She dropped 11 points on Covenant, 20 points and nine rebounds against Huntingdon, and 15 points against Spelman.

On the week, Payne averaged 22 minutes a game, tossing in 15.3 points per game. She was 18-for-31 from the field (58%) which included 7-for-12 and 7-for-10 shooting efforts against Huntngdon and Spelman. She was 9-for-11 from the free-throw line and brought down 20 rebounds, averaging 6.7 per contest. She added 7 assists and 5 steals to her week's work in leading the Scots to a league's best 10-1 mark.

Her counterpart on the men's side had a strong week for Maryville as well. Lambert helped the Scots go 2-0 this week with GSAC wins over Covenant and Huntingdon. Lambert connected on 2-of-2 three pointers for an eight point effort against Covenant before going 4-for-6 from three-point range against Huntingdon en route to a 21 point performance.

On the week, Lambert was 11-for-18 from the field (61%) and 6-for-8 from three-point range (75%). He averaged 14.5 points per game. He added four rebounds and 10 assists, averaging five dishes per challenge.

The women's team hits the road for a conference game tonight against Agnes Scott in Decatur, Ga. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. in Woodruff Gym. The men go out of conference tonight to host Berry in Maryville, Tenn. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
