Maryville Scotts seniors help secure win number 599

MARYVILLE -- The Maryville College seniors helped Randy Lambert score his 599th career victory by defeating the Piedmont Lions, 81-71, on Senior Day.

Milton Stanley, Donald Rucker, Maverick Willett, and Ben Williamson combined for a total of 40 points to help the Scots in the victory. Stanley finished his last game on Randy Lambert Court, dropping in a total of 28 points, while Rucker finished with a game-high seven rebounds.

The Scots came out firing, hitting an 83.3 percent (5-of-6) clip in the first five minutes of play. Jumping out to a 10-0 lead, the Scots held the Lions scoreless until the 13:56 mark when Safari Smith hit a lay-up down the lane to put Piedmont on the board for the first time.

However, the Scots continued to flow offensively, eventually pulling out to a 17-point lead with just under six minutes left in the half, 31-14. The Lions' Tyler Arnold and Josh Haymore led Piedmont back in attack, using a 9-0 run to cut Maryville's lead to only eight, before the Scots took a 40-30 advantage to the locker rooms.

The Scots managed a 48% shooting clip, while connecting on two of their nine three point tries. Maryville's stingy defense held Piedmont to only a 35 percent clip, while capitalizing 14 points on 15 Lion turnovers.

However, Piedmont managed to come firing back in the second half. As Maryville's shooting percentages lagged, the Lions were finding the bottom of the nets. Maryville saw their 10-point halftime advantage slip away, as Piedmont was able to pull within one with 14:15 remaining in the game, behind the shooting of two three-pointers from Michael Ross and Haymore.

A trey by Dylan Delaney gave the Lions their first lead of the game, 49-47, with 13:33 remaining in the second half. They would pull that lead to as many as three (52-49), before Maryville would take control for the rest of the game. The Scots gained a 13-point advantage, before a three-point bucket by Kyle Lundberg produced the final score of 81-71.

Stanley led all players with 28, while Christian Ford and Craig Raye deposited 16 and 13 for the Scots. Oscar Butler matched Rucker with his seven rebounds. Ford led both teams with six assists.

For the Lions, Haymore finished the game with 15 points after going 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Delaney finished with 13, while bucketing three treys, while Richarson Myrthil finished with 11 from the post. Tyler Arnold finished with seven rebounds.

This win moves Randy Lambert to within one of 600 in his career. His Scots will have the chance to help Lambert to his milestone as they travel to Athens, Tennessee on Monday night to take on Tennessee Wesleyan. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm, and will be broadcast live on Knoxivi.
