Three Tennessee Swimmers Named to USA Swimming National Team

ut swimmersKNOXVILLE – Erika Brown, Meghan Small and VFL David Heron (2013-18) have landed spots on the 2019-20 USA Swimming National Team, the organization announced on Wednesday. Joining them on the national team will be current Tennessee coaches Matt Kredich, Lance Asti, Ashley Jahn and Rich Murphy.

Tennessee is one of just three schools with two or more current female student-athletes competing for the national team.

The 2019-20 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes with the highest World Rankings in individual Olympic Events. Qualifying times come from USA Swimming or FINA sanctioned meets from January 1, 2019 through August 25, 2019.

Brown made the cut in two events, the 50 and 100-meter freestyle. The Tennessee senior is tied with Gretchen Walsh for the third fastest 50m time at 24.71. She claims the sixth quickest time in the 100m at 54.13.

Last month at the Phillips 66 National Championships, Brown swam sub-25 seconds for the first time in her career in the 50m to earn gold, setting her time of 24.71. The Charlotte, N.C., native swam 54.13 in the 100m at nationals, touching the wall in second place to take home silver in the event.

Small made the US National Team roster in the 200m individual medley. The Lady Vol senior set her time during a silver medal performance for Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games, swimming a 2:11.36.

Heron will be a member of the open water team, swimming the 10K. The 2019-20 USA Swimming Open Water National Team is comprised of the athletes selected to compete at the 2019 FINA Open Water World Championship, which took place in July in Yeosu, South Korea. Remaining positions were filled based on results from the 2019 USA Swimming 10K National Championships. Heron placed second among American swimmers and fourth overall at the Open Water Nationals with a time of 1:52:22.03.

Joining the three athletes will be four members of Tennessee's coaching staff. Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Kredich, associate head coaches Lance Asti and Ashley Jahn and assistant coach Rich Murphy will be national team coaches.
