ABINGDON, Va. – Heartwood, a towering building that grabs your attention as you drive along I-81 at Abingdon, is a Christmas shopping alternative when your goal is something handmade rather than mass-produced.

Inside the barnlike structure are hundreds of items made by artists and craftsmen from throughout the mountains of Southwest Virginia. You’ll find works in stained glass, rag dolls, decorative brooms, intricate woodcarvings, colorful blankets, ceramic pieces (both artistic and utilitarian), and many other items. In addition to being a retail location, Heartwood is ground zero for visitor information about 19 counties and the many stops on the Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.
