The Trapp Family Lodge is one of Vermont's top resorts

trapp family lodgeLocated in a picturesque, mountain setting overlooking the village of Stowe, the Trapp Family Lodge is one of Vermont's top resorts, with an authentic Austrian ambience and an array of year-round activities. Trapp Family Lodge is owned and managed by the von Trapps, one of the world's best known and beloved musical families. The von Trapps, the inspiration for the film, The Sound of Music, opened this stunning Austrian-style retreat a few years after settling in Vermont in the 1940s.

Music continues to be important, with a harpist in the dining room, a pianist in the lounge, concerts and sing-a-longs. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride, then cross-country ski or snow-shoe over 100kms of trails, stop in the Slayton Pasture Cabin where bowls of steaming home-made soup wait by a roaring log fire. In summer, there are garden tours, Nordic walking paths, concerts in the meadow, tennis, massage therapy and a wide range of workshops. The Trapp Family Lodge is a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property.

Austrian-inspired touches enhance your warm and inviting lodging options. Whether it's the 96-room historic Alpine Lodge, the 100 cozy Guest House Chalets or the luxurious 3 bedroom Villas, the options allow you to choose the ideal destination for you and your family.

The Trapp family first started welcoming guests to their 27-room lodge in the summer of 1950. Thirty-three years later the family opened its doors to a new 93-room resort with the same country charm as the original lodge. The Lodge continues to be owned and operated by the Trapp family. Today, the 2,400-acre resort with sweeping mountain views provides accommodations in an Austrian-style Main Lodge.

This property has one of the best cross-country ski centers in the country. There are 100 kilometers of trails with terrain suitable for every level of Nordic skier or snowshoer. In warmer months, you can walk or hike to enjoy the solitude of the trails that wind their way through meadows and woodlands. The newest addition to outdoor recreation are mountain bike trails. You can rent all the equipment you need at the sports center. The property also has four clay tennis courts, three swimming pools (one indoor) and a great croquet pitch. You will also find daily activities for adults and kids, include baking class, painting, music, dance and jewelry.

For those interested in the history behind the "Sound of Music, they show a documentary film "Maria," about Maria von Trapp's final visit to her homeland of Austria, twice daily. They also have a weekly show Thursday night of "The Sound of Music."
