KNOXVILLE - This morning at 3:04 AM, the Knox County Emergency Communications Center (911) received a call about a reported house fire in the 4100 block of Cottonwood Drive. The caller was not positive about the exact address. On the arrival of the first KFD company, a home was discovered on fire at the corner of Cottonwood Drive and Burwood Road. The exact address was verified as 3400 Burwood.

As the initial KFD Engine Company was setting up operations and other units were still arriving, a female self-extricated from a rear bedroom window. This female was immediately treated for possible injuries and was readied for transport to a local hospital. The occupant said she was asleep and woke up being overcome by smoke. She then went to a rear window and exited the building by jumping a few feet to the ground. The three dogs followed in rapid succession.

The KFD crews, with their swift response, immediately began to combat the fire. Despite the heavy fire conditions, they managed to bring the situation under control by 3:52 AM.

Three dogs were located safely, and one cat is currently missing.

There were no working smoke alarms located in the home. “Home fires claim seven lives every day; simply having working smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death,” said Assistant Fire Chief Mark Wilbanks.

The home has suffered heavy fire damage.

Knoxville Fire Department Fire Investigators are working to determine a cause.

The American Red Cross is assisting.
