KNOXVILLE - The Knoxville Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at Walker's Crossing Apartments in West Knoxville at approximately 1:32 p.m. on August 19th.
When fire crews arrived, they found that a single fire sprinkler head had activated and successfully extinguished a fire inside an apartment before it could spread. The fire was not discovered by occupants or neighbors prior to the activation of the building's fire protection systems.
An investigation determined the fire was electrical in nature and originated in a bedroom. Due to the rapid activation of the sprinkler system, the fire was confined to one corner of the room, significantly limiting fire, smoke, and heat damage.
No one was in the apartment at the time and there were no injuries were reported. Several pets were inside the residence at the time of the fire and all were uninjured.
This incident serves as an important reminder of how automatic fire protection systems work together to save lives and protect property. The fire alarm system promptly notified dispatchers so KFD was able to respond quickly. The sprinkler system controlled and extinguished the fire while it was still small. Without these systems, the fire could have grown undetected and resulted in a large, dangerous fire that could have threatened many occupants, firefighters and residences.
The Knoxville Fire Department encourages residents to ensure smoke alarms are functioning properly and to support the installation and maintenance of automatic fire sprinkler systems whenever possible.
