GATLINBURG, TN - On July 1, Great Smoky Mountains National Park proudly hosted a naturalization ceremony in collaboration with the United States District Court of Eastern Tennessee and the Nashville Field Office of the Department of Homeland Security. This special event marked a significant milestone for thirty individuals who officially became citizens of the United States.

In celebrating the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, Superintendent Charles Sellars expressed his honor in welcoming these new Americans within the scenic surroundings of the park. He highlighted the park’s gratitude for the meaningful role it played in their journey to citizenship.

The ceremony took place at Elkmont Campground, where family members and guests gathered to witness the oath-taking. The individuals represented a diverse array of 17 countries worldwide, including Russia, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. Each participant recited the Oath of Allegiance and received their Certificates of Naturalization, formally welcoming them as U.S. citizens.

During the event, Ranger Agnes Rehr-Zimmerman shared her own inspiring story of becoming a U.S. citizen, motivated by her ambition to serve as a park ranger. Her testimony underscored the personal significance and opportunities that citizenship can bring.

Hosting this naturalization ceremony, just days before America’s 250th birthday, allowed Great Smoky Mountains National Park to celebrate both the rich history of the nation and the promising futures of its newest citizens. This event exemplifies the park’s commitment to honoring diversity, inclusion, and the enduring spirit of the American dream.
