At the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) special agents are conducting an independent investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on Friday night in Knox County.
The incident began shortly after 9:30 p.m. when deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the intersection of Strawberry Plains Pike and John Sevier Highway. The vehicle in question, driven by Andrew Seth Henderlight (DOB: 03/19/87), was observed speeding and failing to maintain its lane. Despite law enforcement’s attempt to stop the vehicle, Henderlight refused and led deputies on a pursuit.
The chase concluded in the 7800 block of Kodak Road in Knoxville, where Henderlight eventually stopped. For reasons still under investigation, the encounter escalated, resulting in three deputies discharging their firearms and striking Henderlight. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies sustained injuries during the event.
The TBI is responsible for collecting evidence, conducting interviews, and determining the facts surrounding the shooting. Their role is strictly to establish the sequence of events based on the evidence gathered. The findings will be provided to District Attorney General Charme Allen for further review and to make determinations regarding the justification of the deputies' actions.
It is important to note that the TBI does not make judgments on the appropriateness of an officer's conduct in such incidents—that responsibility lies with the District Attorney General who requested their assistance. Additionally, the TBI does not disclose the identities of officers involved in these cases; inquiries related to personnel are directed to the respective law enforcement department.
