KNOXVILLE - The Knoxville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at North Knoxville Baptist Church, located at 217 W. Oldham Ave., at approximately 6:30 a.m. after a passing driver reported seeing smoke coming from the building.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the front of the church. Crews quickly entered the building and brought the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes.

The foyer sustained fire, smoke, and water damage, while the remainder of the church experienced significant smoke damage. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.

Knoxville fire investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set. Evidence recovered at the scene, combined with video surveillance, helped investigators identify a suspect. Investigators searched the surrounding area and located 43-year-old Jeremy Lee Hensley at a nearby camp. He was taken into custody at approximately 8 a.m.

Hensley, who has no known affiliation with North Knoxville Baptist Church, has been charged with felony arson and burglary. Additional charges may be filed. He is being held at the Knox County Detention Facility.
